6th September, 1920.

Dear Mr. Beckett,

In reply to your letter of the 3rd-September the present position as regards the vacancies for ten Assis- tant listresses in the Education Department of Hong Kong is as follows:- the Selection Committee for the Colonial Educational Service interviewed four applicants for these posts about a month ago and regretfully came to the con- clusion that none of these candidates were suitable. This view was fully endorsed by l'r. E. Ralphs, the Inspec- tor of English schools in Hong Kong, who was a member of the Selection Committee. Particulars of the qualifications and experience of the four applicants in question were sent to the Colonial Office with our official letter of August 27th in reply to Er. Grindle's letters of June 3rd (19822/ 20) and July 21st(33724/20). Since then we have only received one fresh application for these posts. The H. Beckett, Esq.,

Colonial Office,

Downing Street,

S.W.1.
